External Wall Insulation and Façade Design

The changing face of construction in the 21st century - new legislation, urban regeneration, changing lifestyles, devolving economics - places greater demands on the way in which we plan and construct our buildings.

Clients want innovation combined with efficacy; architects want greater flexibility of design; the owner wants to preserve the fabric of the building; and the occupier wants lower running costs and a comfortable internal environment in which to live.

There is a simple solution that meets everybody's requirements - External Wall Insulation.

EWI - Flexibility in design

The grey monotony of dismal 1960's suburbs, dispensing with any real design, did not create a worthwhile environment and is no longer acceptable to the people living and working in them.

No other construction method allows you greater flexibility of design than EWI. Using an infinite combination of textures, colours, shapes and materials, the architect has total freedom to realise the client's vision.

EWI - The complete insulation system

Over half the energy required for heating a building escapes through the exterior walls. If we also consider that approximately 75% of domestic energy consumption is devoted to heating, then the ecological and economic impact becomes apparant.

Research shows the most effective way of insulating a building is by total encapsulation. No matter what the construction of the walls, no matter what the shape of the building, the 'Tea cosy' effect is unsurpassed. Using External Wall Insulation, ensures that, while the effects of cold bridging and interstitial condensation may effect some other methods of insulation, a totally encapsulated building remains warm and dry.

EWI - Past, present and future

The core business for EWI has traditionally been the refurbishment of social housing. To reduce the U value calculations of traditional concrete panel, low and high rise tower blocks, in line with current legislation, EWI has proved to be the most suitable method of insulation.

EWI is simply a cost-effective method of protecting the structure of the building, extending its useful life and enhancing the living conditions of its inhabitants.

EWI - A solution for all types of building technology

Over the last decade, changing legislation and improved construction methods have altered building technology dramatically. From solid wall construction and the use of AAC blocks, to fast build technologies such as metal and timber frames and prefabricated sectional panels.

As well as addressing the needs of more traditional construction methods, EWI has responded and adapted to the requirements of these new technologies. However, with all of these technologies, an external finish is required.

Solid wall construction

In response to changing legislation and economic factors, solid wall construction is one of the fastest growing methods of building today.

Solid wall construction allows wall dimensions to be kept to a minimum.

Metal frame construction

Metal frame is perceived as being a 'fast track' building technology. Light in weight, when used in conjunction with EWI, buildings can be made wind and weather tight very quickly.

Timber frame construction

The combination of timber frame construction and EWI produces some of the most thermally efficient buildings. U values as low as 0.20 W/mK can be achieved using this method.

Insulating externally:

Does not reduce room sizes in any way

Does not cause major disruption

Protects the fabric of the building

Prolongs the life of the building

Improves the quality of living conditions

whereas, insulating internally:

Reduces room sizes

Causes major disruption

Does not protect the fabric of the building

Does not prolong the life of the building

Does not release condensation
